HVAC & The Elements

Good Saint Nick isn’t the only one up on the rooftop in December, your HVAC systems are as well! Chances are you haven’t been on the rooftop recently to inspect your HVAC systems. While HVAC systems are built to withstand tough weather elements such as wind, rain, and sun, mother nature and father time can still cause damage to them. Here are some ways that time and weather can affect your HVAC systems.

Weather Over Time

Common weather elements such as rain and sun aren’t damaging right away. However, over time these elements can cause rust, sun damage, and flooding in your HVAC system. A way to prevent some of this damage is by using a weather cover on your HVAC system. Weather covers are built to prevent rust, excess water, and sun damage in or outside of your HVAC system. Proper quarterly maintenance also helps prevent most of these issues before the damage is irreparable.

Severe Weather

Severe weather such as ice, hail, and snow causes the most damage to HVAC systems. For ground-level units ice falling from rooftops above can dent or even destroy HVAC units below. Hail is damaging to both rooftop and ground-level units. While hail won’t necessarily destroy your HVAC system like large ice chunks and icicles can, it can still dent or damage components inside or outside of your HVAC system. To prevent severe weather damage, ensure that there is no large ice that can fall onto your unit from above. Weather covers can help protect against hail to a certain extent, however, large hail can be damaging regardless of how much protection the HVAC system has.
