What Makes A Great HVAC/R Technician?

When it comes to HVAC/R services, quality work is key. From preventative maintenance to emergency repairs, technicians must always be prepared to do the job efficiently and correctly. With the high skill set of an HVAC/R technician also comes great responsibility that not everyone is qualified for. All technicians in our self-performing areas are held to the highest professional standards. There are several qualities that are needed to get the job done right. Here are four core qualities that all of our technicians have to always provide excellent HVAC/R service.

Reliable & Self Motivated

To respond to work orders efficiently and on time, technicians must always be reliable and self-motivated. Our technicians depart from home so it is their responsibility to get up in the morning and be ready with their tools for the job. They must always be ready to take on any challenge that may arise during the day whether that be an emergency repair where timing is crucial or several preventative maintenance repairs that they have to keep track of. Without reliability, we cannot count on our technicians to get to the job site on time or do the job correctly. This means that reliability is a must with all of our technicians to meet our standards. Self-motivation is also key for our technicians to always provide quality work. Without self-motivation, work quality suffers which is never acceptable with how crucial HVAC/R can be for a business’s success.

Problem Solving Skills

When HVAC/R technicians get ready for the day they are equipped and prepared for the challenges that may await them at the job. Sometimes technicians will run into problems or a repair may not be as simple as they had expected. This is where having good problem skills comes into effect. Problem-solving skills allow technicians to think on their own and come up with solutions as well as pay attention to detail and correctly identify the problem to find the correct solution. Correctly identifying a problem and then coming up with the steps to get a solution is needed on the job. Patience is required with problem-solving as getting frustrated and giving up doesn’t solve the problem but staying calm and thinking to provide a solution will almost always work.

Safe Work Habits

When safety is not followed on the job not only are technicians at risk of OSHA violations, but they also are risking themselves and others. Technicians must always take safety seriously and make it their number one priority on the job. By taking safety seriously technicians can complete the job correctly as well as keep themselves and everyone around them safe. Safety also plays a key factor in work quality as oftentimes work that was not completed with the proper safety measures in place is much poorer than work completed with the proper safety measures. Technicians always practice safe work habits on the job such as wearing the proper protective equipment, are fully aware of their surroundings, and are focused on their work at all times.

Strong Communication

Strong communication is also a crucial trait to have as an HVAC/R technician. On the job, you will need to always have good communication with your dispatchers, service managers, and coworkers so that everyone is on the same page. It is important to always know what everyone is working on to not only save on time and confusion but to also build stronger relationships with your coworkers. Teamwork plays an essential key to productivity and how much can get done. Teamwork cannot be achieved without strong communication skills between all workers. Strong communication also allows you to effectively plan out your work and keep everyone informed of your work that has been completed and what needs to be completed.

Having these traits allow HVAC/R technicians to not only perform the job correctly but to also always provide excellent service.
