Safety For Employees
In the HVAC/R field, dangerous situations can happen very quickly if safety measures are not followed or taken into consideration. The goal of every HVAC/R technician should be to follow all safety measures on the job so they can do the job correctly and go home to their loved ones every night. When working on HVAC units and equipment, technicians should always wear the proper personal protective equipment (PPE). According to OSHA “PPE is equipment worn to minimize exposure to hazards that cause serious workplace injuries and illnesses. These injuries and illnesses may result from contact with chemical, radiological, physical, electrical, mechanical, or other workplace hazards.” Wearing PPE is important but so is being aware and alert on the job. Technicians should always have the proper training to do the job correctly and minimize safety risks.
Safety For The Environment & Surroundings
HVAC/R technicians should always be aware of their surroundings and their environment. Things such as weather conditions, heights, traffic, and other things are out of the technician’s control and must be taken into consideration when performing a job. For example, a technician will not want to be on a rooftop addressing a unit during a thunderstorm. Technicians should always consider their surroundings and environment when performing a job. While a technician’s safety is important, any people who may be affected by the job should also be considered. For instance, if a technician is performing work on ground-level HVAC units, they should make sure that the work they are doing is blocked off from other pedestrians and inaccessible to the general public so that no safety incidents occur.
